It seems to me that aside from the ways that anti-gay views are passed on from generation to generation within some families, that such attitudes are often reproduced when those in power (political leaders, church leaders, teachers, etc.) use their power and position to express such views, to restrict discussion, and to force out those who do not fit in.
imo, that's a misuse of their position, and so far away from the servanthood and the acceptance of others which we see in the life of Jesus, and which we should see in the lives of those who follow Him.
